2. Copper Canyon

Who doesn’t know the Grand Canyon? Mexico has its own version of the Grand Canyon: the Copper Canyon. Located in Chihuahua, the fantastic Copper Canyon is a true natural attraction. The name comes from the copper color that the canyon has. The Copper Canyon is mainly known for the famous train route that runs through this area. It is definitely recommended to take this train route with stops so that you do not miss anything of this spectacular adventure! View the beautiful Copper Canyon, including the train ride here:

3. The Historic Center of Mexico City

Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is a popular vacation spot for tourists and the Mexicans themselves. Mexico City offers countless fun, interesting and special sights that you really must see when you come to Mexico. Centro Histórico de la Ciudad, or the historic center of Mexico, offers a huge amount of historical attractions to admire. Think of the National Palace, Templo Mayor and Metropolitan Cathedral. To make this adventure even cooler, there are even 2 volcanic mountains around the city, called Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl (Good luck pronouncing that correctly …). All in all, enough reasons to visit Mexico City.

4. Guanajuato

Guanajuato is a special colonial city, in the middle of central Mexico. To immediately come up with a good reason to admire this beautiful city: the houses have all kinds of different, beautiful colors. Blue, orange, pink, purple, green, red, yellow, you name it. It provides a very nice feeling. Guanajuato has a huge underground corridor, where traffic runs. Guanajuato is brimming with terraces and bars, where you can enjoy. The city has several nice squares to visit. Jardín de la Unión is seen as the center. Then, the most insane sight according to many: The Mummy Museum. This museum is not for the faint hearted, as no fewer than 100 different, lifelike – or well, lifelike, of course they have been gone for a while now – mummies are on display. Definitely a true highlight of Guanajuato. Make sure to look away if you don’t want to see what the mummies look like:

5. Tulum

Tulum has become a real attraction in recent years. If you are looking for a luxury vacation, Tulum is the place to be. Tulum has several well-preserved Mayan ruins. These are located right next to the sea, which makes for an absurdly beautiful environment. In addition to this, there are many more wonderful things to see, such as the cenotes. These are water filled caverns, where you can snorkel. The water is full of fish and turtles, highly recommended! The largest and most famous cenote is the Grand Cenote, appropriate name don’t you think? When you’ve had enough of all this effort, you can relax at La Eufemia, the coolest beach club you will encounter here. The club is on the beach and there are plenty of seats. The perfect place to end the day. Watch a photo of the Grand Cenote here:

Playa del Carmen is undoubtedly one of the most popular areas in Mexico for tourists. Located in the Yucatán Peninsula, Playa del Carmen has everything your heart desires: cozy bars, restaurants, cool clubs, souvenir shops, you name it. Furthermore, the entire area is surrounded by All-Inclusive resorts. Quinta Avenida is perhaps the most popular place in Playa. Because here are the clubs. In addition to all this, Playa is surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches and Cenotes, just like in Tulum. This means that Playa, just like Tulum, is very suitable for snorkeling. Playa is full of beautiful street artwork. So you can take nice pictures here! Get an impression of Playa del Carmen:

7. Teotihuacan

In this ancient city you can admire many cool sights. As in Egypt, pyramids can be seen here. These date from just after the birth of Jesus Christ, namely between 100 AD – 450 AD. The most special places in Teotihuacan are the sun and moon pyramids & the Quetzalcoatl temple. In the past, when this city was discovered by the Aztecs, more than 150,000 people already lived there. That is of course a huge number. The Aztecs conquered this gigantic empire as it was then and named it “The House of the Gods” or Teotihuacan.

A fun activity to do in Teotihuacan is to take a balloon ride. Then you really see how huge Teotihuacan is. I do not speak from my own experience, but according to Sjoerd Lagraauw of the website reis-expert.nl, it is more than worth it. 8. Chitzen Itza

Mexico has a lot of Mayan cities, but Chichen Itza is one of the best known and most popular among tourists. It is therefore often very busy. Chichen Itza has one of the most developed Mayan ruins there is: El Castillo, or the temple / pyramid of Kukulkan. The design of the pyramid in Chichen Itza differs from the Mayan ruins in other cities in Mexico, which is remarkable to say the least. There is a strong influence from other societies from central Mexico. Chichen Itza is easily accessible from, for example, Cancun and can make for a fun daytime activity.

Interesting to know is that Chichen Itza is known as one of the 7 modern wonders of the world. In the spring and fall, something cool happens at the Kukulkan pyramid in this city. The shadow the pyramid creates makes it seem like a snake is sliding down the stairs. Very special!

You are able to see all of Chichen Itza within a couple of hours, so make sure to pay a visit! Look at this awesome photo of the Kukulkan Temple:

9. Taxco

Looking for bling bling? Then you are in the right place in Taxco. Taxco is known for their silverware. Silver jewelry in particular. Tasco used to be a very important mining place. That is now a thing of the past, however. The city is now filled with colonial houses and small and large silverware shops. Within 3 hours you are in Taxco by bus from Mexico City and costs about 225 pesos per person.

A cool experience that you can gain in Taxco is the visit of the Cristo Rey, or a kind of typical Latin-American statue of Jesus. You can easily get here by taxi. This will take you to a high point and from here you can see the whole city. This is very spectacular, especially in the evening when all the lights go on! View a photo of the view here:

10. Cozumel

If you’re looking for a true tropical paradise, Cozumel is perfect for you. The beaches, including Playa San Juan and Playa Santa Rosa, are absolute tourist attractions. Cozumel is great when you are out to linger on the beach with a drink and a snack.

Furthermore, Cozumel is very attractive because of the possibilities for diving. Coral reefs, colourful fish, turtles; you will see so many awesome creatures passing by when you go diving. The Palancar reef, one of the more advanced dive sites, is no less than 80 meters deep. So definitely worth it!

Laguna Chankanaab is one of the cooler places in Cozumel. This is a freshwater lake, with beautiful clear water and beautiful fish. The lake is now part of the Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park.
